I am currently a freshman at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago; I have created this blog for several reasons, most importantly to have a better understanding of the nature of art in today’s contemporary arena. My experiences as a first year student in a highly conceptual (contemporary) institution have precipitated my long intentions of critiquing what society sees as art, and I’m writing to you as an artist disappointed with the misguided common sense view of art. Furthermore, I would also like to engage with a neighborhood of opinions larger that what is accessible in an art school, or a casual conversation with anyone. I want to fine-tune my opinions of contemporary art, to place your opinions aside mine, and through rational inquiry discover which views are superior.
I also want to improve the contemporary outlook on art, to enhance the views of others the same way their judgments may better me. As there are many of you who may be wondering what exactly I mean by ‘misguided views,’ I shall explain my overall issue with contemporary in my first topic.
